How to Get Your Ohio Driver's License

We're here to guide you to your Ohio driver's license!

To get your Ohio Driver’s License, follow these steps:

  1. Age Requirement: You must be at least 16 years old and have held a learner’s permit (Temporary Instruction Permit Identification Card) for at least 6 months.
  2. Classroom Education: Complete 24 hours of classroom driver’s education. You can fulfill this requirement by taking an online course or visiting a driving school classroom.
  3. Driving Training: Complete 8 hours of driving lessons with a certified driving instructor. (After completing your 24 hour online course.)
  4. Driving Practice: Complete 50 hours of driving practice with a licensed adult who is over 21 years old. Out of the 50 hours, 10 hours must be done at night.

Once you have met these requirements, you can schedule your driving test. You can do this either at an BMV Authorized Driver Examination Station (authorized driving school) or at the Ohio BMV.

When going for your driving test, make sure to bring the following items:

  • Driver Education 24HR Certificate of Completion
  • A filled-out affidavit from a guardian confirming 50 hours of driving practice
  • Your valid Temporary Instruction Permit Identification Card (TIPIC)
  • A vehicle for the state driving test
  • Required fees

If you are under 18 years old, your license will be considered a probationary driver license until you turn 18.

Additional rules for young drivers:

  • 16-year-old drivers cannot drive between 12 a.m. (midnight) and 6 a.m. unless accompanied by a parent or guardian.
  • 16-year-old drivers cannot have more than one non-family passenger in the car, unless a parent or guardian is present.
  • 17-year-old drivers cannot drive between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m. unless accompanied by a parent or guardian.
