How to Get Your Ohio Learner's Permit (TIPIC)

aka: Temporary Instruction Permit Identification Card (TIPIC / Temp)

If you want to start learning to drive in Ohio, you will need to get a Temporary Instruction Permit Identification Card (TIPIC), also known as a learner’s permit or “temp”.

To apply for your learner’s permit, go to your local BMV Deputy Registrar License Agency.

You will need to be at least 15 and 5 months old to apply.

Bring certain documents to prove your:

  • Residency in Ohio
  • Identity
  • Date of birth
  • Social Security Number
  • Legal presence in the U.S.

If you’re under 18, you need to be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian who can prove their own identity. You also have to pay the required fees for the temporary permit.

Before you get your learner’s permit, you’ll have to pass a vision test and a written exam. The written exam covers Ohio motor vehicle rules and traffic signs. Our course is designed to help you pass this exam on your first try. It provides the information you need in an easy online format.

Once you have your learner’s permit, you can start your behind-the-wheel training and practice.

Rules for driving with a TIPIC:

  • Always carry your temps driver permit (TIPIC) while driving.
  • If you’re driving, you must be accompanied by a licensed parent, guardian, or certified driving instructor in the passenger seat.
  • Once you turn 16, you can drive with a licensed driver who is 21 years or older.
  • If you’re under 17, you cannot drive with more than one non-family member unless accompanied by a parent, guardian, or legal custodian.
  • If you’re under 18, you can’t drive between midnight and 6 a.m. unless accompanied by a parent, guardian, or legal custodian with a valid license.
  • Violations while holding a permit may result in penalties and restrictions. Check the Ohio BMV site for all TIPIC restrictions.
